U.S. ARMY 163RD ARMORED BRIGADE UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Approved on 19 June 1989, the 163rd Armored Brigade Distinctive Unit Insignia pays tribute to the Brigade’s first opportunity to display its “Courage And Valor” in Federal service during the Philippine Insurrection with the inclusion of a sea lion taken from the coat of arms of the city of Manila; the sea lion is also found on the seal of the Philippine Navy, Presidential seal, various government departments, and even on the Philippine Legion of Honor.

The Philippine sea lion is a particularly fitting image for the Brigade because it returned, forty-plus years after its first deployment to the island, as part of the 41st Division (163rd Infantry Regiment) to liberate the nation from Japanese occupation and was honored with a Philippine Presidential Unit Citation.

Bookending the sea lion is a fleur-de-lis, a reference to the unit’s service in France during World War I, and a cactus that symbolizes the Mexican border and the unit’s participation in the Mexican Expedition of 1916 – 1917.
