U.S. ARMY 114TH SIGNAL BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 114th Signal Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved on 16 October 2003. It features a shield that is counterchanged, i.e., the left and right are mirror images but with alternating colors, a scheme that underscores the teamwork and unity in the Battalion. Two orange and white lightning flashes, which themselves refer to the service the unit provided during two activations prior to the insignia's approval, form a chevron that symbolizes support and protection. Most prominently displayed is a rampant horse that embodies enthusiasm, zeal, and eagerness to serve the nation.

Originally activated as the 3364th Signal Service Battalion on 28 October 1944, the 114th Signal Battalion did not receive its current title until fifteen years later in 1959. Under its original designation, the unit was part of Army Service Forces and provided key support to Army Air Force Operations and training at Miami Army Air Field. It was inactivated on 22 April 1946, and was later awarded a Meritorious Unit commendation for service in the American Theater.

In October 1959, the unit was redesignated as the 114th Signal Battalion and allotted to the U.S. Army Reserve and activated at Greensboro, North Carolina, where it would serve until it was inactivated again on 31 January 1968. Thirty-five years would elapse before it was activated again as a unit of the 21st Signal Brigade on 16 October 2003 at Fort Detrick, Maryland, assuming the mission of the 1111th Signal Battalion (deactivated at the same time). It is still based in Fort Detrick under the command of the 21st Signal Brigade, part of the 7th Signal Command (Theater) and nicknamed “Signal Masters Of The Rock.”
