TENNESSEE ARMY NATIONAL GUARD ELEMENT, JOINT FORCE HQ UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia.

A twisted wreath in the colors red and white forms the foundation for the Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), or unit crest, of the Tennessee Army National Guard (ARNG) Element, Joint Force Headquarters (HQ). Red and white are used for the wreath to acknowledge the state's origins with its first settlers being of English heritage.

A hickory tree is a direct reference to Andrew Jackson, who was nicknamed “Old Hickory” and eventually built a home in Nashville named The Hermitage. Three stars stand for the state’s three geographic divisions: The hickory tree refers to Andrew Jackson who was known as "Old Hickory" because of his toughness as a fighter.  The three white stars which appear on the State flag allude to the three grand divisions or areas of the State:  East Tennessee, Middle Tennessee and West Tennessee.

The Tennessee ARNG Element, Joint Force HQ Distinctive Unit Insignia was first approved for the Tennessee National Guard’s State Staff and all non-color and non-standard bearing units back in January 1932. In October 1968, the insignia was redesignated for the HQ and HQ Detachment and non-color bearing units, Tennessee ARNG, with an amendment to add symbolism to its design on 1 April 1974. The last change made before the insignia received its current designation came in 1983 when it was assigned to HQ, State Area Command, Tennessee ARNG with an effective date of 1 March 1983. This unit crest was given its current designation and symbolism on 1 October 2003.

Joint Force Headquarters, Tennessee National Guard are stationed in Nashville, Tennessee.
