U.S. NAVY CWO SPECIAL WARFARE BOAT OPERATOR HARD SHOULDER BOARDS

How difficult is it to qualify for a Naval career in the Special Warfare Boat Operator (SB) rating? According to a December 17, 2015 story on the Navy Times Web site, hundreds of thousands of men and women contact Naval Special Warfare recruiting every year. Of those, around 10,000 actually contact a recruiter and work to prepare, and in the end less than 700 are cleared to begin training. When you then consider how many potential SB Sailors wind up dropping out during the eight-and-a-half-month training process, it’s easy to see why the Navy puts so much effort into encouraging interested enlistees into seriously considering becoming a Special Warfare Combatant-Craft Crewman (SWCC).

On the Navy’s official SWCC Web site, stats from previous Basic Crewman Training (BCT) classes (which all up-and-coming Special Warfare Boat Operators must successfully compete) are displayed so that potential SWCC candidates can get a better idea of what areas they need to focus on in terms of physical fitness requirements. It turns out that high rankings in the 3-mile run, 1000-meter swim with fins, and the 300-yard shuttle runs are indicators of better odds of actually completing the grueling BCT course. Also found there are tips on how to learn the Combat Side Stroke, an essential of the SB and Special Warfare Operator ratings, and a Physical Training Guide to prepare for the rigorous training at BCT.

In creating the Frequently Asked Questions for potential SB recruits, the Navy made it a true FAQ by drawing from the hundreds of questions they receive about SWCC training every day. One of the most frequent: Should those considering a career as an SWCC take one of the many private training courses that claim to emulate the Navy’s program at the Naval Special Warfare Center in Coronado, California? Unsurprisingly, the answer is a resounding “no.”

Interestingly, it would seem that those who think they might be up for the rigors of SWCC training at least understand they will be doing a lot of running—the question “What boots are issued training” made the list posted on the Web site. (Answer: Bates 922 series.)
