PUERTO RICO ARMY NATIONAL GUARD ELEMENT, JOINT FORCE HQ UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The Distinctive Unit Insignia of the Puerto Rico Army National Guard (ARNG) Element, Joint Force Headquarters (HQ) was first approved for the Puerto Rico Army National Guard’s HQ and HQ Detachment and non-color bearing units on 9 October 1967. It was then redesignated for the HQ, State Area Command, Puerto Rico Army National Guard on 29 March 1983. Over three decades would elapse before the insignia was given its current designation on 1 October 2003.

Like the insignias of many units in the Puerto Rico Army National Guard or of those based on the island, the Puerto Rico ARNG Element, Joint Force HQ Distinctive Unit Insignia features a reference to El Moro Castle, in this case the embattled wall and sentry towers. The entire gold castle wall symbolize the island of Puerto Rico, with four sentry towers serving as compass roses pointing in the four primary directions (N, S, E, W) to encompass the entire territory. These red sentry towers form a cross, and the their white doorways are conjoined to create another cross and thus recall the banner of St. John (white/silver cross on a red field).

The insignia’s red and gold hues are the national colors of Spain, and the overall shape of the insignia and the symbols it comprises reflect the influence of Spanish heritage and culture on Puerto Rico. SIEMPRE PRESENTE is the organization’s motto and is Latin for “Always Present.”
