Oklahoma’s rich Native-American heritage is celebrated in the Oklahoma Army National Guard Element, Joint Force Headquarters Distinctive Unit Insignia, often called a unit crest or DUI. The Indian displayed in profile on it is inspired by the Seal of the State of Oklahoma, which shows the chieftain grasping the hand of a settler in friendship. Below the Indian is a twisted wreath of yellow and blue, denoting the fact that the territory of Oklahoma was once under French rule and was acquired in the Louisiana Purchase.
The insignia was originally approved on 7 August 1937 for State Staff and State Department, Oklahoma National Guard and its design was amended to enable the manufacturing the insignia in pairs on 14 April 1939. It was redesignated on 16 July 1968 for the HQ and non-color bearing units of the Oklahoma Army National Guard (ARNG) , but again was amended—this time to change the description and add symbolism—when it was redesignated for HQ, State Area Command, Oklahoma ARNG ON 30 December 1983. It was given its current designation on 1 October 2003.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.
