The regular size (1-/14 inch) Petty Officer Second Class (E-5) metal grade insignia is worn in two distinct locations on three types of coats. With the blue single-breasted All-Weather Coat, these insignia are worn on the collars;  they are placed on the epaulets of  the double-breasted All-Weather Coat and the Black Relax Fit jacket, with the bottom edge of the device about 3/4 from the large, squared end of the epaulet. (Note: the single-breasted All-Weather Coats are authorized for wear only until 1 October 2020, at which point they will be removed as an authorized clothing item).

Sailors who have qualified for gold rating badges and gold service stripes are authorized to wear the gold-chevron version of this device on the Black Relax Fit jacket when wearing the Service Uniform. Sailors whose most recent twelve years of Naval service, active or reserve, meets the requirements for Good Conduct Service are authorized to wear gold rating badges, service stripes, and chevrons on metal grade insignias.
