The Navy’s Captain rank insignia for Flight Suits is the same size as the insignia of grade worn on the All-Weather Coat and is made of cloth or is embroidered. Worn centered on both shoulders of the Flight Suit, the insignia is placed so its outer edge is about 5/8-inch from the shoulder seam; Captains orient their rank insignia so the top of the eagle’s head points to the collar and the eagle is facing to the front.

Flight Suits are authorized for wear by aircrew members and other personnel who take part in actual flight or flight-related duties, but the authorization does not extend to those performing non-aircrew maintenance/support or ground-support duties.

U.S. Navy uniform regulations regarding when and where Flight Suits may be worn have eased considerably over the past two decades. Today, Flight Suits may be worn during commutes to and from work, as well as when making “normal task and associated stops,” which the manual explicitly states includes “stops at child care, gas stations, off-base shopping, banking, DMV and dining.” Twenty years ago, however, the rules were considerably more strict: in the January 1998 manual, we read “Flight suits may be worn outside of organizational spaces only while in/on military facilities, traveling in a government/private vehicle between local military facilities, or directly to and from member's domicile.” There was one saving grace, however: Regional commanders could authorize flight-suit wear “for brief stops in the same manner as other working uniforms.”
