U.S. NAVY FIRE CONTROLMAN (FC) BALL CAP DEVICE

Following Recruit training, the first stop for Sailors who meet the academic and citizenship requirements necessary for careers in the Fire Controlman (FC) rating is the Apprentice Technical Training (ATT) School at Naval Station Great Lakes in Illinois. Created as part of the Revolution in Training in the early 2000s, the ATT schools relies on computer-based training to introduce students to the fundamentals of electronics, electronic circuitry, microcomputers, fiber optics, and other technologically advanced that is employed throughout today’s Navy. Fire Controlmen are just one of several ratings that take part in the ATT School.

After completing the two-month ATT program, FC Sailors attend the Class “A” School for rating-specific training, also held at Naval Station Great Lakes. Here they begin to learn about the tools of the trade: Ballistics (both missile and gun), the use of 2D and 3D radar, troubleshooting computing and radar systems, and basic principles that apply to a broad range of tasks related to the Fire Controlman rating.

Successfully finishing the Class “A” school is the ticket for FC Sailors to move on to advanced training at a Class “C” school, where they are taught the intricacies of specific systems which they will be using, such as the MK99 Fire Control System. The MK99 is an integral component of the AEGIS Combat System that is at the heart of all U.S. Navy shipboard defenses. Manned by a Fire Control Operator and operating under parameters set by other FC Sailors, the MK99 loads and arms selected weapons, launches them, and guides them through the use of illuminating radar.

Fire Controlman is a source rating for Chief Warrant Officer (CWO) designators 718x/728x and 726X, Electronics Technician (Surface/Submarine) and Ordnance Technician respectively.
