MONTANA ARMY NATIONAL GUARD ELEMENT, JOINT FORCE HQ UNIT CREST (DUI)

A fleur-de-lis forms the centerpiece of the Distinctive Unit Insignia of the Joint Force Headquarters (HQ) of the Montana Army National Guard (ARNG), symbolizing the geographical apportionment of the last state to be created from the territory acquired in the Louisiana Purchase. Adapted from the crest of the Montana ARNG, its yellow and white colors allude to the inscription ORO Y PLATA, Spanish for “Gold And Silver,” on the Montana State Seal and, together with the gold chevrons, allude to the copious gold deposits found in the “Bonanza State.” Inside the chevrons are stylized mountain peaks, a reference to the state name of Montana, which is a Spanish word for “mountain.”

This Distinctive Unit Insignia, also referred to as “unit crest” or a DUI, was first approved for HQ and HQ Detachment and non-color bearing units of the Montana ARNG on 11 June 1971. It was redesignated for the HQ, State Area Command, Montana ARNG with an effective date of 30 December 1983, and on 1 October 2003 it was given its current designation.

The Montana National Guard Joint Force Headquarters are located in Helena, Montana.

Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
