The U.S. Army Missile and Munitions Center and School Patch—officially known as a Shoulder Sleeve Insignia (SSI)—was approved for wear on 7 November 1969. On 2 May 2002, its wear authorization was extended to include the U.S. Army Ordnance Center and School, one week after the Ordnance Center and School SSI was cancelled at the request of the Officer of the Chief of Ordnance on 25 April 2002.
That decision was likely made because the old Ordnance Center patch was extremely similar to the Missile and Munitions Center and School Patch. It consisted of a “torch” just like the one seen in this insignia—a flaming bomb sitting above the shaft handle of a torch. The Missile and Munitions Center and School Patch elaborates on that design by surmounting the “torch,” which represents knowledge, with a yellow (gold) missile and a yellow cartridge arrange saltirewise, i.e., in the form of an “x.”
The Missile and Munitions Center and School SSI is available as a nonsubdued (color) patch, worn today on the Army Green Service Uniform, or as subdued (camouflage) patch designed for wear on the Army Combat Uniform (ACU) or other utility uniforms. Two subdued versions are offered: the UCP (Universal Camouflage Pattern) is designed for wear on the Army Combat Uniforms and utility uniforms that were manufactured with the UCP, all of which became obsolete as of 1 October 2019. The OCP (Operational Camouflage Pattern) version is worn on ACUs and other Utility uniforms made with the OCP that was designed to replace the much-disliked UCP.
