MINNESOTA ARMY NATIONAL GUARD ELEMENT, JOINT FORCE HQ UNIT CREST (DUI)

Blue and white, colors of the Minnesota State Flag, are the predominant tones used for the Minnesota Army National Guard Element, Joint Force Headquarters Distinctive Unit Insignia, also referred to as a “unit crest” or a DUI. Designed as a shield, the insignia features two wavy, white bars horizontally spanning its lower half that symbolize water (the word “Minnesota” is said to be a derivative from the Sioux Indian language that means “sky-tinted water” or “water tinted like the sky”). The gold star in the upper portion of the shield is an allusion to the North Star, as Minnesota is commonly referred to as the “North Star State.”

The insignia dates back to 11 September 1933, when it was approved for the Minnesota National Guard’s State Staff and Detachment. It was redesignated for the HQ and HQ Detachment, Minnesota Army National Guard (ARNG), as well as all non-color bearing Minnesota ARNG units, on 24 February 1969. A reorganization of the National Guard led to its redesignation on 24 February 1983 for the Minnesota ARNG’s HQ, State Area Command, and on 1 October 2003 it was given its current designation for the Minnesota ARNG Element, Joint Force HQ.

The Joint Force Headquarters of the Minnesota National Guard are located at St. Paul, Minnesota.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
