U.S. ARMY MEDICAL DEPARTMENT ACTIVITY, FORT JACKSON UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The U.S. Army Medical Department Activity (MEDDAC) Fort Jackson Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved on 30 August 1973 and was amended to correct its description on 5 August 2016. It previously had been designated for the U.S. Army Hospital, Fort Jackson from July 1970 until the 1973 redesignation.

It features the inscription “Accentuate The Positive,” the MEDDAC’s motto, in yellow (gold) letters on a maroon background: gold is the color of excellence and maroon is the color of the Army Medical Department. A Greek cross, commonly found on the insignia of Army Medical Department organizations, serves a dual purpose here as the mathematical sign for addition or “plus,” reinforcing the “Positive” message of the motto with the border around it serving to “Accentuate” the imagery.

The MEDDAC’s location at Fort Jackson in Charleston, South Carolina is denoted by the palmetto tree (South Carolina is known as the “Palmetto State”), with a hickory branch serving as a reminder of the Fort’s namesake Andrew Jackson or “Old Hickory.” A flaming torch is a common heraldic charge denoting the illumination that comes through education and training; here, it represents Fort Jackson’s role as one of four centers for initial military training (Basic Training) under the command of U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command, or TRADOC. The Fort is also home to United States Army Financial Management School and the U.S. Army Chaplain Center and School.
