U.S. ARMY MEDICAL DEPARTMENT ACTIVITY, FORT EUSTIS UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Originally approved for the McDonald Army Hospital on 13 January 1970, the Distinctive Unit Insignia for the U.S. Army Medical Department (MEDDAC), Fort Eustis was approved on 30 August 1973. Its status as an organization of the Army Medical Department is denoted by the use of the colors maroon and white in the insignia, while a red cross in its center is a symbol of sustained aid, the basic mission of the MEDDAC. A wheel in the center with an anchor and a pair of wings above it is a direct allusion to the Army Transportation School, which was located at Fort Eustis up until 2010 when it moved to Fort Lee, Virginia. The unit motto of “Medicine In Motion” is also a reference to the Transportation School.

McDonald Army Hospital, the MEDDAC’s predecessor, was originally opened on 26 March 1941. From August 1944 to February 1946 the hospital was the property of the Department of the Navy following a War Department decision to declare the facility “surplus property.” It was redesignated as U.S. Army Hospital, Fort Eustis on 1 September 1948.

Although Fort Eustis’ longstanding association with the Transportation Corps because it was home of the Transportation School ended in 2010, the Fort remains home of the 7th Transportation Brigade, one of the Army’s most frequently deployed Transportation brigades, as well as the U.S. Army Transportation Museum. The vacancy created by the departure of the Transportation School was filled when U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command relocated its headquarters there in 2011.

Known as Joint Base Langley-Eustis following the implementation of recommendations by the Base Realignment and Closure Commission, Fort Eustis is also home to the U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence NonCommisioned Officers Academy.
