U.S. ARMY MEDICAL DEPARTMENT ACTIVITY, FORT CARSON UNIT CREST (DUI)

Frequently referred to as a unit crest, the Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI) for the U.S. Army Medical Department Activity (MEDDAC), Fort Carson was originally approved for the U.S. Army Hospital, Fort Carson on 6 August 1969. It was redesignated for MEDDAC, Fort Carson on 22 August 1973.

Besides symbolizing wisdom and strength, the trio of white, stylized peaks allude to the snow-capped Rocky Mountains which rise outside Fort Carson in Colorado. The triangles also suggest Indian tepees, recalling the legendary Indian scout Kit Carson for whom the Army installation is named.

A maroon cross connotes mercy and physical care for those in need, the basic mission of the MEDDAC. Unlike some crosses found in MEDDAC insignias, the one used here has a vertical beam that terminates at the bottom in a point known in heraldry as a “fitche,” a term originating from a spike attached to the foot of a cross carried by pilgrims during the Middle Ages. This enabled the pilgrims to insert the spike into the ground and keep the cross upright so it could be used as sign of location where the sojourners would encamp for the night.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
