2ND MARINE AIRCRAFT WING, U.S. ARMY FORMER WARTIME SERVICE SHOULDER SLEEVE INSIGNIA

Note: the United States Marine Corps discontinued the wear of unit insignia by active-duty personnel in the 1950s, but this patch is a perfect way to display your esprit de corps on caps, jackets, shirts, or hoodies, or camo.

As the aviation combat element of the II Marine Expeditionary Force, the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing is stationed is headquartered at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point in North Carolina and is the service's major air unit on the east coast. It is comprised of four Marine Aircraft Groups (MAGs), two based at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) New River (MAGs 26 and 29), one at MCAS Beaufort (MAG-31), and a fourth at Cherry Point, which is also where the Wing’s Air Control Group is based.

The Wing is also home of the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing Band. Stationed at Cherry Point, the band consists of over 50 musicians and boasts a repertoire ranging from march and ceremonial compositions performed by the full band to tunes from various genres such as Jazz, Show Tunes, Pop/Rock, Country, and Chamber Music played by its various ensembles.

The 2nd Marine Air Wing was activated in July 1941 with its headquarters originally located in San Diego along with two of its six squadrons; the four remaining squadrons were based in Hawaii and suffered extensive damage during the Japanese sneak attack on December 7, 1941. Despite these losses, however, the Wing contributed aircraft that took part in over 80 World War II operations in the South Pacific, including Wake Island, Midway, Guadalcanal, Saipan, Guam, and Tinian.

The Wing relocated to its current base at Cherry Point, North Carolina in April 1946, and since that time has supplied trained units and personnel to operations around the world in locales such as Lebanon, Grenada, Panama, the Dominican Republic, Kosovo, and Serbia. It deployed units during the Southwest Asia Campaign in 1990 and 1991 (Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm), was active in Operation Southern Watch, and deployed units for operations in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom.
