Embroidered Lieutenant Colonel rank insignia is worn on the shoulder straps of the Evening Dress jackets of both the male and female versions of the Evening Dress “A” and “B” uniforms, making them the only Officer uniforms on which metal grade insignia are not worn.

Marine Corps uniform regulations allow the rank insignia to be embroidered directly onto the Evening Jacket’s shoulder straps (often referred to as epaulets) or to be embroidered onto a cloth of the same color as the Evening Jacket and then sewn onto the shoulder straps. We offer the insignia-on-cloth version because the actual insignia remains unmarred by stitching when it’s attached to the shoulder straps.

When sewing the insignia cloth on to the shoulder straps, the silver oak leaf should be oriented so the stem is pointing toward the armhole. Position the cloth so the oak leaf, not the cloth, is centered between the front and back edges of the shoulder strap, and the bottom of the oak leaf’s stem is three-quarters of an inch (3/4”) from the armhole seam.
