The Korea Defense Service Medal is a United States military decoration that was first created in 2002 by order of President George W. Bush. In 2004, the Institute of Heraldry approved the final design of the decoration and the medal became authorized for distribution.
The Korea Defense Service Medal(KDSM) was awarded to the members of the U.S. military who have served duty in the Republic of Korea to uphold the armistice between South and North Korea.This medal is awarded to service member of military ,who, is in duty for atleast thirty consecutive days in the Korean theater.The medal is also awarded for 60 non-consecutive days of service which includes reservists on annual training in Korea.
In some cases,if a service member was participated in a combat armed engagement,and if he was wounded or injured in the line of duty, or if he was participated in flying sorties as a regularly assigned aircrew member,then the total number of days of duty in Korean airspace will be more than 30.Then In such cases, the Korea Defense Service Medal is awarded regardless of the time served in Korean theater.
