KANSAS ARMY NATIONAL GUARD ELEMENT, JOINT FORCE HQ UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

All National Guard units are given a dual mission, with their primary duty being to serve under the command of State authority to provide assistance during local or statewide emergencies, from natural disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes, tornados, and fires to civil disturbance. But they can also be activated the President of the United States to take part in Federal missions that can take them overseas or call for their deployment within our nation.

This two-pronged responsibility is represented on the Distinctive Unit Insignia of the Kansas Army National Guard Element, Joint Force Headquarters by the placement of a sunflower in the center of a shield divided into white, blue and red areas. The flower represents Kansas, “The Sunflower State,” while the three national colors of the the field acknowledges its Federal role and its readiness to fulfill it when needed. A twisted wreath in gold and blue is an allusion to the fact that the territory making up Kansas was acquired from France as part of the Louisiana Purchase.

This DUI was first assigned for the Kansas Army National Guard’s State Staff Corps and Departments on 10 January 1930. Before receiving its current designation in October 2003, it underwent two redesignations, the first on 30 January 1969 for the HQ and HQ Detachment and non-color bearing units, Kansas Army National Guard and the second on 1 October 1982 for the HQ, State Area Command of the Kansas Army National Guard.

Kansas National Guard Joint Force Headquarters are located in Topeka, Kansas.
