U.S. ARMY, JAPAN UNIT PATCH (SSI)

Available in a full-color version for wear on the Army Green Service Uniform and a subdued version for the Army Combat Uniform, the United States Army, Japan unit patch—technically referred to as Shoulder Sleeve Insignia-Military Operations In Hostile Conditions, or SSI-MOHC—was originally approved for the Army Forces, Far East Command on 5 September 1952. The insignia was amended on 25 February 1953 to change the name to United States Army Forces, Far East, only to be rescinded in July 1957. On 3 April 1959, it was reinstated and redesignated for United States Army, Japan. A simple reproduction of Mount Fuji instantly conveys the information that the unit is located in Japan.

United States Army, Japan (USARJ) is the Army Component Command of United States Forces Japan and is a major subordinate command of United States Army Pacific. Its earliest precursor was U.S. Army Forces Far East (AFFE), established in Manila in 1941 with its Headquarters in Melbourne; with the war’s end the HQ was relocated first to Tokyo, then to Yokohama in the summer of 1953, and finally to the organization’s current home at Camp Zama in the Kanagawa Prefecture, about 25 miles southwest of Tokyo, in October 1953.

Its name was changed to United States Army, Japan in 1957 as the result of a reorganization of U.S. military forces that led to the unit’s designation as a major subordinate command of United States Army Pacific. Today, USARJ’s largest component is I Corps, activated in December 2007 to replace the 9th Theater Support Command.

In total, USARJ comprises roughly 2,000 Soldiers. In addition to its peacetime mission of operating ports and logistics installations based throughout Honshu and Okinawa, USARJ plays a vital role in maintaining and strengthening the credibility of our nation’s deterrent power in the Pacific.
