U.S. ARMY INSTALLATION MANAGEMENT COMMAND PATCH (SSI)

Activated on 24 October 2006, the Installation Management Command consolidated three existing organizations—the Installation Management Agency (IMA), Community and Family Support Center, and Army Environmental Center—to streamline the support mission and provide uniformity of service to over 180 Army installations across the globe.

Its creation was spurred in part by the success experienced by the IMA, which had been formed in 2002 to remove the burden of managing Army installations spread across fifteen major command by using an enterprise approach to eliminate inefficiencies. Utilizing the same enterprise approach, the Installation Management Command system yielded immediate and significant savings: in Fiscal Year 2006, the Army fulfilled its installation management mission for a whopping $4.5 billion less than in 2003.

Headquartered at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, the Command coordinates the efforts of over 75,000 professionals. Since 2019, the IMC has been a major subordinate command of Army Materiel Command.

The U.S. Army Installation Management Command Shoulder Sleeve, commonly called a unit patch, is a heptagon with a red field and black border. Seven geographic regions are overseen the Commands, represented by the heptagon’s seven sides. Four links of chain secured to a ring in the center emphasize durability, while the ring itself is symbol of continuous service; together, they represent the Command’s continual worldwide support to all Soldiers, Civilians, family members, and units regardless of location.

Two crossed swords are an emblem of teamwork and symbolizes the Command’s focus enabling the preparation and training of Soldiers for combat whenever necessary to defend and protect our nation. In heraldry, yellow is interchangeable with the color gold, which reflects high honor and lofty values of the Command as it seeks to fulfill its motto to “Sustain Support Defend.”

The Installation Management Command unit patch was approved on 15 August 2002 for the Installation Management Agency and was amended with revised symbolism a little over three years later in November 2005. On 1 October 2006, the date of the Command’s activation, the insignia was redesignated for the Installation Management Command.
