IDAHO ARMY NATIONAL GUARD ELEMENT, JOINT FORCE HQ UNIT CREST (DUI)

The Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI) of the Idaho Army National Guard Element, Joint Force Headquarters is replete with imagery that evokes the state’s mountainous terrain and verdant topography, beginning at the top with a golden sun rising between two snow-capped peaks, a visual allusion to the Rocky Mountains. In front of each mountain looms a pine tree, a reference to the White Pine (the Idaho state tree), with an elk’s head between them that was inspired by the design of the Shoulder Sleeve Insignia of the Idaho Army National Guard (ARNG). The pine trees also recall Boise, the state capital of Idaho known as the “City of Trees.”

A blossom below the elk symbolizes the Idaho state flower, the syringa, while the wavy blue bars at the base are emblems of the numerous lakes, rivers, and waterways in the state. “Professional First” is the organization's motto.

Also referred to as a unit crest, this Distinctive Unit Insignia was originally worn by members of the HQ and HQ Detachment and of non-color bearing elements of the Idaho ARNG and was approved on 19 March 1971. It was then redesignated for the HQ, State Area Command, Idaho ARNG on 1 October 1982. A reorganization of the National Guard designed to reinforce the organization’s joint force capabilities led to the insignia’s redesignation for the Idaho ARNG Element, Joint Force Headquarters on 1 October 2003.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
