DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA ARMY NATIONAL GUARD ELEMENT, JOINT FORCE HQ UNIT CREST (DUI)

The Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam (DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however).

For Enlisted personnel, the insignia is centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap" respectively.

The Distinctive Unit Insignia of the District of Columbia Army National Guard (ARNG) Element, Joint Force Headquarters (HQ) was originally approved for HQ and HQ Detachment and non-color bearing units of the District of Columbia Army National Guard on 10 October 1972. Its description was amended on 1 February 1973 to denote the change of the base metal of the badge from silver to gold. On 30 December 1983, the designation was changed to HQ, District Area Command, District of Columbia Army National Guard. It was subsequently given its current designation on 1 October 2003 and its description updated.

The dome of the United States Capitol Building that forms the basis of this insignia is inextricably associated the District of Columbia. A rising sun behind the dome is taken from the Great Seal of the District of Columbia to denote the ascendency of our National Capitol and the nation it represents. The twisted wreath on which the dome rests is red and white to reflect the District of Columbia’s location with the territory of the thirteen English colonies. “Capital Guardians,” the organization’s motto, is also a description of the unit’s primary mission.

The District of Columbia National Guard can be deputized as special police, a role that active-duty military can not assume and one which makes it a critical element in large-scale operations such as presidential inaugurations held at the nation's capitol.
