Unlike the Army, Navy, and Air Force, the Coast Guard does not have its own Medical Corps or Department for the training and commissioning of physicians to provide medical care for Guardsmen. Instead, these needs are served by Officers in the Commissioned Corps of the United States Public Health Service (USPHS). While the Commissioned Corps has its own uniform regulations (borrowed heavily from the U.S. Navy), Corps Officers assigned to Coast Guard units and stations wear Coast Guard uniforms—but with Commissioned Corps insignia.

Our hat band for USPHS Officers serving in the Coast Guard is designed to accommodate the Commissioned Corps cap device, which consists of a spread eagle surmounted on a shield with 13 stars and 13 stripes; the shield is mounted over a crossed fouled anchor and caduceus.

A special hat band for USPSHS CC Officers is necessary for a couple of reasons. First, they cannot simply use the USCG Officer hat band because it was designed to hold a device with a wildly different shape and proportions. And they can’t use the Coast Guard’s CPO/Enlisted hat band because the USPHS Officer device is too wide to be properly displayed upon it.
