U.S. ARMY ELEMENT, WALTER REED NATIONAL MILITARY MEDICAL CENTER UNIT CREST (DUI)

The Distinctive Unit Insignia for the U.S. Army Element, Walter Reed National Military Medical Center is composed entirely of maroon and white (silver), the colors of the Army Medical service, and was originally approved in January 1937 for the Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. On 16 August 1954, it was redesignated for the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, and was subsequently given its current designation on 18 July 2011.

In the center of the shield portion of the insignia is a caduceus, symbol of the Army Medical Service with a history dating back to the Greco-Roman period. It is bookended by an open book and a flaming torch, traditional heraldic symbols of knowledge. Serving as a crest is helmet of Minerva, ancient goddess of Wisdom and Patroness of Medicine. The unit motto is SCIENTIAE INTER ARMA SPIRITUS, a Latin phrase that translates as “In The Spirit Of Science And Arms.”

Previously known as the National Naval Medical Center and commonly referred to as “ ”Bethesda Naval Hospital” or simply “Bethesda” because of its location in the community of Bethesda, the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center is one of the most renowned medical centers in the nation. Named after the U.S. Army physician whose work was crucial in drastically reducing the transmission of Yellow Fever among workers constructing the Panama Canal, the Center has treated numerous presidents and other famous political figures.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
