U.S. ARMY ARMY VETERINARY COMMAND UNIT CREST (DUI)

The U.S. Army Veterinary Command Distinctive Unit Insignia—frequently called a “unit crest” or DUI for short—was originally approved for the Meat and Dairy Hygiene School on 15 July 1953 and was redesignated for the U.S. Army Medical Service Veterinary School on 20 Jul 1962. On 21 March 1969 it was redesignated for the U.S. Army Medical Department Veterinary School but subsequently canceled on 31 January 1975.

Eight years later, on 9 February 1983, an exception to policy was made and the insignia was reinstated for wear by personnel assigned to non-color bearing units of the U.S. Army Medical Department Veterinary Services. Following the reorganization of U.S. Army Veterinary Command, the insignia was redesignated for it and all non-color bearing veterinary units on 2 Oct 1994. In July 2011, the insignia was canceled again following the integration of Army Veterinary Command into the U.S. Army Public Health Command.

Maroon and white (silver) are the colors of the Army Medical Department, and the torch in the center of the shield is a traditional symbol of learning and knowledge; it is entwined by serpents to denote medical training and practice. Above the shield is a unicorn, the mythical creature whose horn was supposed to possess the power of purification and which here represents the hygienic functions of the organization for which the insignia was originally approved. “Knowledge Integrity” was the motto of Army Veterinary Command.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
