U.S. ARMY SPACE COMMAND UNIT CREST (DUI)

Approved on 12 December 1988, the Distinctive Unit Insignia of the now-defunct United States Army Space Command features a scroll with the organization’s motto “First In Space” cradling a blue, gridlined demi-globe that represents Earth as seen from space. At the top, the arrowhead-style device, called a pheon, implies the Army’s duties of ballistic missile defense and planning for strategic defense against missile attacks.

To the left of the pheon is a four-pointed star placed on an orbital line, suggesting the Army’s ability to use satellites for GPS and navigation capabilities. To the right of the pheon, a five-pointed star symbolizes the Army’s use of satellites for communications and surveillance. Swooping around and upward is a deltoid flight symbol, recalling the Army’s history of booster and launcher designs and the close relationships that was forged between the Space Command and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

This insignia became obsolete with the creation of the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command in 1997.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
