Gold Shoulder cords are worn by members of several military or military-related organizations, typically as part of ceremonial attire for special events or as in recognition of an honor or achievement.
In the Civil Air Patrol, for example, Section 9.3.1. of the uniform manual specifies that gold shoulder cords are to be worn the primary members of the National Cadet Advisory Council; qualifying cadets may wear them at all times when wearing the Service Dress (Class A) or Blue Service (Class B) uniforms.
The United States Army’s JROTC Cadet Command Regulation 145-2, published by U.S. Army Cadet Command, states that gold shoulder cords are worn by JRTOC cadets who are member of honor organizations such as local or national honor societies.
NSCPUB 500, NSCC/NLCC Uniform Regulations also authorize the wear of gold shoulder cords, but does not provide specific guidance regarding linking the color to a particular officer or recognition. Instead, the rules state that “black, gold, red, and yellow [shoulder cords” are also authorized” and that they are worn only by cadets “when serving in an official capacity during specific events such as color guard presentation, drill team performances or service on a recruit division staff.”
In the U.S. Army, AR 670-1 authorizes the wear of shoulder cords only by Infantry personnel (blue) and members of the Marksmanship unit (blue, red and white), but local commanders may prescribe the wear of shoulder cords in a unit’s branch color.
