U.S. ARMY INTELLIGENCE CENTER AND SCHOOL UNIT CREST (DUI)

The United States Army Intelligence Center of Excellence Distinctive Unit Insignia—also known as a unit crest or DUI—was originally approved on 14 April 1961 for the U.S. Army Intelligence School. On 16 July 1982, its authorization for wear was extended to personnel of the U.S. Army Intelligence Center (USAIC); this authorization was similarly extended to include personnel of the USAIC and Fort Huachuca. (The Institute of Heraldry has not updated the entry for the USAIC and Fort Huachuca since the installation was designated as the U.S. Army Intelligence Center of Excellence and Fort Huachuca.)

According to The Institute of Heraldry, teal blue and yellow are the predominant colors in the insignia in order to perpetuate the history of Army Intelligence. Intelligence operations have tactical and strategic aspects, reflected by a checkered background that also recalls a chess board. The field (area inside the shield) has three divisions to denote the three primary phases of Intelligence: collection, production, and dissemination. A sphinx is an emblem of wisdom and silence, while the black background behind alludes to secrecy and covert operations.

The crest is an architectural construction, and the lamp inside denotes enlightenment through the passing on of knowledge. The sheathed saber upon which the lamps rests stands for military leadership. VERITAS VIGILANTIA VICTORIA, the organization’s motto, is Latin for “Truth Vigilance Victory.”

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia."

A component of U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command, the Intelligence Center of Excellence was originally located at Fort Holabird, Maryland and called the U.S. Army Intelligence School. In 1971 it relocated to its current location at Fort Huachuca, Arizona. The Center holds resident courses for Commissioned and Warrant Officers as well as Enlisted Soldiers, and it conducts a military exchange program through which students from foreign nations can receive training. It is also home to the Military Intelligence Corps Hall of Fame.
