U.S. ARMY FIELD ARTILLERY SCHOOL UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, the Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia."

The U.S. Army Field Artillery School Distinctive Unit Insignia was originally approved for The Field Artillery School on 8 April 1926, some fifteen years after the U.S. Army School of Fire was organized in 1911 by Captain Dan Tyler Moore. It was redesignated for the U.S. Artillery and Missile School on 11 September 1957, and a dozen years would elapse before it was given its final designation for the U.S. Field Artillery School, now known as the U.S. Army Field Artillery School.

Located at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, the school has operated continually since its provisional opening as the School of Fire in 1911 save for a brief period during the Mexican Expedition in 1916. Since the end of World War I, the school has operated under a bevy of designations, including Field Artillery School (1919-1946), The Artillery School (1946-1955), The Artillery and Guided Missiled School (1955-1957), U.S. Army Artillery and Guided Missile School (1957), U.S. Army Artillery and Missile School (1957-1969), and its current title of U.S. Army Field Artillery School.

CEDAT FORTUNA PERITIS, the school motto, is a Latin phrase that succinctly expresses the school's raison d'être: “Let Fortune Yield to Experience” or, in even straightforward terms, “Skill is Better than Luck.”
