U.S. ARMY CBRN SCHOOL UNIT CREST (DUI)

The Distinctive Unit Insignia of the U.S. Army CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear) School was originally approved for the Chemical Warfare School 1 May 1934. Nearly twenty years later, it was redesignated for the U.S. Army Chemical Corps School on 27 May 1953. Following the closure of the Chemical Corps School in the mid-1970s, the insignia was cancelled on 13 August 1976, but it was subsequently reinstated with an amended description and redesignated for the U.S. Army Chemical School on 22 February 1980.

ELEMENTIS REGAMUS PROELIUM, the motto of the CBRN School inscribed on a scroll encircling the insignia, is Latin for  “We Rule The Battle By Means Of The Elements.” Dragons are often used on the insignia for Chemical Corps units; here, a fiery breath and destructive capability of a dragon rampant (upright with outstretched forelegs/arms and a leg off the ground) symbolizes the awesome devastation that CBRN weaponry can unleash. (CBRN personnel are often referred to as “Dragon Soldiers.”) A twisted wreath of cobalt blue and yellow incorporates the official branch colors of the Chemical Corps.

Except for a brief period during the mid-1970s, the U.S. Army CBRN School was based at Fort McClellan, Alabama from 1952 to 1999, the year it was relocated to Fort Leonard Wood. It remains stationed there as of Winter 2024.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
