The headgear insignia worn on the Service Cap of the Army Service Uniform of male and female Army Officers, both Commissioned and Warrant, is a gold-colored metal rendering of the obverse of the Great Seal of the United States of America, also known as the coat of arms of the United States. The insignia for wear on male Officers’ caps measures 2 and 3/8 inches in height, while the version for female Officers’ headgear is 1 and 5/8 inches high.

Unlike the cap devices worn by enlisted personnel, the Coat of Arms is unbounded, i.e., not placed on a disk (male enlisted), inside a ring (female enlisted), or surrounded by a wreath (Sergeant Major of the Army), and consequently is sometimes referred to as an “Officers’ Eagle.”

Prior to 2004, Warrant Officers had their own distinct headgear insignia comprised of an eagle rising with spread wings and talons clutching two arrows, all enclosed in a wreath. But this insignia was discontinued with the issuance of ALARACT 042/2004, which ordered all Warrant Officers to “place the ‘coat of arms of the U.S.’ insignia on all service caps effective 9 Jul 04.”

However, the iconic Warrant Officer insignia was not completely banished to the dustbin of history: the same announcement stated that "Warrant officer candidates will wear the warrant officer 'Eagle Rising' insignia beginning at the senior phase of warrant officer candidate school and continuing through their graduation from warrant officer basic course."
