U.S. ARMY 9TH THEATER SUPPORT COMMAND UNIT CREST (DUI)

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-
1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Commonly called a unit crest or DUI, the Distinctive Unit Insignia of 9th Support Command features a torii, or traditional Japanese gate, that represents the unit’s initial activation location (Okinawa). The roughly blue, roughly circulate nine-sided polygon (nonagon), (which is also used for the unit’s Combat Service ID Badge, or CSIB) also refers to Okinawa, with the nine sides standing for the unit’s numerical designation. "Service To Our Customers," the Command's motto, is proudly displayed in text above and below the torii.

This insignia was originally approved on 5 February 1969 for the 9th Logistical Command. On 1 November 1994, it was redesignated for the 9th Support Command, with the description and symbolism revised.

The history of the 9th Theater Support Command begins with the constitution and activation of HQ, 9th Logistical Command on Okinawa in May 1960. It was reorganized and redesignated as HQ and HQ Detachment, 9th Logistical Command on 15 March 1961 and was subsequently inactivated in Thailand in June 1970. It was activated as HQ and HQ Company, 9th Theater Army Area Command nearly a quarter-century later on 9 December 1994.

It would serve as a Theater Area Army Command until its reorganization and redesignation as 9th Theater Support Command, activated in October 2000. The Command’s final inactivation came in 2007 activation of I Corps (Forward), an element of I Corps that assumed the missions that had been assigned to the 9th Theater Support Command
