U.S. ARMY 9TH INFANTRY REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

While the designation of 9th Infantry Regiment was first used in 1798, the lineage for the current 9th Infantry Regiment traces its origins to a unit of the same name organized in 1855. It has earned credit for taking part in campaigns in the Civil War, Indian Wars, the War with Spain, the China Relief Expedition, Philippine Insurrection, both World Wars, the Korean War, the War on Terrorism, and the Iraq War. With the inactivation of the Regiment’s 2nd Battalion in June 2015, the only active Battalion in the Regiment is the 4th, which is assigned to the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado.

The phrase “Keep Up The Fire,” found on the 9th Infantry Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia (also called a unit crest or DUI for short) was inspired by the actions of Regiment Commander Col. Emerson H. Linscum at the Battle of Tientsin during the Boxer Rebellion. After picking up the Regimental flag that had been dropped by the standard-bearer after he fell wounded, Linscum tried to rally his men by rushing to grab the colors and lead the way, but he was shot in the process. As he lay dying, Linscum uttered the phrase that not only would be remembered for decades to come, but which also inspired his Soldiers to press on for victory.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

For Enlisted personnel, the insignia is centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia."
