U.S. ARMY 97TH TRAINING BRIGADE UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as unit crests, Distinctive Unit Insignias (DUIs) are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

For Enlisted personnel, the insignia is centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Formed as a result of the the 2010 redesignation and reactivation of the 96th Infantry Division which had inactivated since 1946, the 97th Training Brigade runs the Command and General Staff Officers’ Course that is conducted at numerous sites throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. Its primary duty is assisting Army Reserve Majors in completing their Professional Military Education requirements. As of Winter 2024, it is headquartered at Fort Sheridan, Illinois.

Approved on 29 July 1970 for the 97th Army Reserve Command, the 97th Training Brigade Distinctive Unit Insignia features the unit motto, “Preparedness By Example,” inscribed around white trident superimposed on a blue disc. The white trident is a link back to the 97th Infantry Division, which was inactive at the time; the Army authorized the 97th ARCOM to wear the Division’s insignia and fly its colors but not to perpetuate its lineage. The white and blue wavy bands at the bottom represent the two organizations, Division and Command. Three prongs on the trident denote the organization’s three combat teams that played a key role during the April 1945 battle of the Ruhr pocket.
