U.S. ARMY 96TH SUSTAINMENT BRIGADE UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 96th Sustainment Brigade Distinctive Unit (DUI) Insignia, or unit crest, was initially approved for its predecessor unit the 96th Army Reserve Command on 15 October 1970, but the heraldic imagery was inspired by an even earlier ancestor of the Brigade, the 96th Infantry Division. Nicknamed "Deadeye Division" because of the emphasis its commanders placed on marksmanship training, the Division took part in two landings in the Pacific theater during World War II, one in the Leyte Gulf on 20 October 1944 (it was awarded an Arrowhead for this assault landing) and another on the island of Okinawa on 1 April 1945.

As of Autumn 2023, the 98th Sustainment Brigade is an United States Army Reserve unit assigned to the 364th Sustainment Command, 79th Theater Sustainment Command. It is headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah. Click the links below to learn more about the lineage and history of the Brigade.

“To Serve And Excel,” the Brigade motto, is inscribed top and bottom on the insignia. Superimposed on a demi-sunburst are two squares, one blue and white, oriented as diamonds with the blue square covering a portion of the white one; these are taken from the Brigade’s unit patch and represent the states of Oregon and Washington to which the Division was assigned in the 1920s. A gold Arrowhead denotes the Division’s assault landing credit at Leyte in 1944. The demi-sunburst is a reference to the Philippine Presidential Unit Citation the Division received in 1950, which included a streamer inscribed “17 October to July 1945.”

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
