U.S. ARMY 949TH SUPPORT BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 949th Brigade Support Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia, also referred to as a unit crest or DUI, was originally approved for the 949th Maintenance Battalion on 15 May 1972. It was rescinded on 5 November 1975, then reinstated and again authorized for the 949th Maintenance Battalion on 30 November 1976. On 1 June 1987, it was redesignated for the 949th Support Battalion.

During World War II, the Battalion was designated as the 155th Field Artillery Battalion and took part in seven campaigns in the European Theater, with two of the campaign streamers (Naples-Foggia and Southern France) augmented with an Arrowhead device denoting the Battalion’s participation in assault landings; these are represented by the five points of the star in the center and the arrowheads bookending the star, which is taken from the authorized crest for Texas Army National Guard Units. “Pride of Ordnance,” the unit motto, reflects the organization’s one-time status as an Armored Ordnance Maintenance Battalion.

The crimson field and light blue Lorraine cross recall the French Croix de Guerre with Palm that the Battalion was awarded while incorporating the colors associated with Maintenance units, the Battalion’s former branch. A laurel sprig denotes the Palm device; the Lorraine cross is an allusion to the Vosges where the Battalion earned the Croix de Guerre.

Guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 949th Brigade Support Battalion was originally organized in the Texas National Guard as the 1st Battalion, 133rd Field Artillery, an element of the 36th Division on 1 June 1936 (its HQ was organized and given Federal recognition on 27 July 1936). Its most recent reorganization and redesignation came in June 1987 when it became the 949th Support Battalion; it is unclear when it received the Brigade Support Battalion designation.

It's credited with taking part in seven World War II campaigns in the European Theater (one with an Arrowhead designation for participation in an assault landing), with the Battalion’s Company A entitled to three additional campaigns in the Asiatic-Pacific and Company B also credited with  two Asiatic-Pacific campaigns. The Battalion was tapped for a World War II French Croix de Guerre with Palm, while Company A was individually chosen for two Presidential Unit Citations and Company B earned a Meritorious Unit Commendation.

As of 2023, the 949th Brigade Support Battalion is assigned to the 56th Brigade Combat Team, 36th Infantry Division, Texas Army National Guard and is based in Fort Worth, Texas.
