U.S. ARMY 94TH BRIGADE SUPPORT BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 94th Brigade Support Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia—also called a unit crest or a DUI—was approved for the 94th Quartermaster Battalion on 19 October 1962. It was redesignated twice, first in 1966 for the 94th Supply and Service Battalion and lastly for the 94th Support Battalion with updated symbolism. It features a relatively simple design, with the color buff referencing the unit’s origins in the Quartermaster Corps and the spit (rotisserie) and ear of wheat alluding to the activities of the 94th Quartermaster Battalion (Bakery), the unit’s first designation. The unit motto references this function: "La Soutien De La Vie" is French for "Staff Of Life," i.e., bread.

Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 94th Brigade Support Battalion has undergone eight redesignations since it was originally constituted as the 94th Quartermaster Battalion (Bakery) on 13 January 1941, a number made even more significant by the fact that the unit wasn’t even active for a 37-year stretch from 1968 to 2005. Entering the Sicily campaign, its first of five in Italy during World War II, the unit was designated as the 94th Quartermaster Bakery Battalion, but on 13 November 1943 it was reorganized and redesignated, with its HQ and HQ Detachment becoming HQ and HQ Detachment, 94th Quartermaster Battalion. In addition to its five campaign streamers, the Battalion was also awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation for its service in Italy. It was inactivated in March 1946.

Thought activated during parts of the Korean War, the Battalion was not deployed overseas and would not find itself in a combat zone again until 1966, when it was redesignated as the 94th Supply and Service Company and spent a little over a year-and-a-half in Vietnam, earning two campaign streamers before the start of a 37-year period of inactivation on 15 January 1968.

Redesignated as the HHC, 94th Support Battalion on 30 March 2004, the unit was assigned to the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division and activated at Fort Polke on 16 January 2005. While serving with the 4th BCT, the Brigade was redesignated as the 94th Brigade Support Battalion and was awarded a pair of Meritorious Unit Commendations (one for service between 2007-2008, another for 2010-2011) and Army Superior Unit Award for 2012-2013. On 24 February 2015, the 94th Brigade Support Battalion was inactivated along with the rest of the 4th Brigade Combat Team, which reflagged as the 3rd Brigade Combat Team.
