U.S. ARMY 926TH ENGINEER BRIGADE UNIT CREST (DUI)

The Distinctive Unit Insignia (often called a unit crest) of the 926th Engineer Brigade features the unit motto of “Our Mission Above All,” a credo whose adherence by the Brigade is evinced by the award of two Meritorious Unit Commendations for service in Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom during two separate deployments.  The 926th Engineer Brigade DUI was approved for the 926th Engineer Group on 26 August 1969; it was subsequently redesignated (with updated description and symbolism) on 4 October 2006.

In the center of the insignia, a star and folded wings in the shape of a heart allude to the Alabama state capital of Montgomery, where the Brigade’s headquarters are located. The star is a reference to a star on the portico of the State Capitol building where Jefferson Davis took the oath of office as President of the Confederate States of America; the shape of the wings is a nod to Alabama’s nickname as the “Heart of Dixie,” and they also celebrate the Brigade’s service in World War II as an Engineer Aviation unit.

As of Winter 2024, the 926th Engineer Brigade is allotted to the U.S. Army Reserve and its HQ and HQ Company is based in Montgomery, Alabama. It has four units assigned to it: the 391st, 467th, 841st, and 926th Engineer Battalions.

Often called a unit crest or referred to by the initialism DUI, the Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam (DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however).

For Enlisted personnel, the insignia is centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the insignia by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap" respectively.
