U.S. ARMY 91ST TRAINING DIVISION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 91st Training Division Distinctive Unit Insignia was first approved for the 91st Division (Training) on 2 May 1968. It was also approved for the 91st Division (Training Support) in 1999, the 91st Training Brigade in 2009, and the 91st Training Division in 2010. A green fir tree has been a traditional symbol associated with the 91st Division/91st Infantry Division since it was used as a Shoulder Sleeve Insignia in 1919. The scarlet fleur-de-lis alludes to the courageous sacrifices made in combat in Europe during both World Wars. At the top of the tree, a gold star is an emblem of the high achievements of the 91st Division’s Training program. The wavy blue band along the border of the insignia is meant to recall the winding Powder River, source of the famed “Powder River, Let’er Buck” motto.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 91st Training Division (Operations) was originally formed 5 August 1917 in the National Army as HQ, 91st division and organized 26 August at Camp Lewis, Washington. It fought in three World War I campaigns before returning to the U.S. and being demobilized 13 May 1919, but it was reconstituted in June 1921 and organized that October. Redesignated as Division HQ, 91st Division in April 1942, it was reorganized and called into active service in May and redesignated as HQ, 91st Infantry division. Its three World War I campaigns were all in Italy (Rome-Arno, North Apennines, Po Valley), and it was sent back to the U.S. in time to be inactivated on 1 December 1945.

Activated on New Year’s Eve of 1946 in the Organized Reserve, the Division was reorganized and redesignated as HQ, 91st Division (Training) on 1 May 1959. It has been a Training unit ever since that time and has served under a variety of designations, 91st Division (Exercise) from 1993 to 1999, 91st Division (Training Support) from 1999 to 2009, 91st Training Brigade (Operations) from 2009 to 2010, and today as the 91st Training Division (Operations).

As of Winter 2024, it remains a Training unit in the Army Reserve assigned to the 84th Training Command and headquartered at Fort Hunter Ligget, California. It comprises two Brigades, the 1st and 2nd, and is also responsible for the Mission Training Complex at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in New Jersey.
