U.S. ARMY 8TH INFANTRY DIVISION UNIT CREST (DUI)

More commonly referred to as a "unit crest" or "DUI," the Distinctive Unit Insignia for the Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC), 8th Infantry Division features a figure 8 rendered in blue (official branch color for Infantry) combined with red for the number's interior spacing in order to create the appearance of an Infantry Division flag. Inscribed in gold on the blue 8 is the phrase "These Are My Credentials" and Pathfinder, the HHC's motto and official nickname, respectively. Five stars at the top-right of the crest stand for the division’s service in World War I and its official credit for participation in four World War II campaigns.

The design of this insignia is very similar to the 8th Infantry Division's Combat Service ID Badge, or CSIB (link below). Visit our 8th Infantry Division CSIB page to learn the fascinating story behind the origins of the phrase "These Are My Credentials" and why it was chosen as the unit motto.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 8th Infantry Division was originally constituted in 1917, with only a few of its units arriving in France before the signing of the Armistice on 11 November 1917, leading to the Division earning a World War I Victory streamer uninscribed with any particular battles or locations. It would take part in four campaigns in World War II, and from the late 1950s until 1992 it was stationed in Germany as part of U.S. Army Europe.
