U.S. ARMY 8TH FIELD ARTILLERY REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Nicknamed “Automatic Eight,” the 8th Field Artillery Regiment was originally constituted as Battery B, 8th Field Artillery on 1 July 1916 at Fort Bliss, Texas and assigned to the 7th Division in December 2017. Prior to World War II, it was
redesignated as Battery B, 8th Field Artillery Battalion and was made an element of the 25th Infantry Division.

Fighting in the 25th during World War II and the Korean War, the unit took part in 13 campaigns, where it lived up to its unit motto of “AUDACIEUX ET TENACE” (“Daring and Tenacious”) and was honored with three Presidential Unit Citations, three Republic of Korean Presidential Unit Citations, a Navy Unit Commendation, and a Philippine Presidential Unit Citation. For actions in the Global War on Terrorism, the Regiment has been awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation and a Valorous Unit Award.

Between 1957 and 1983, seven battalions were added to the regiment, four in 1959 alone and seven between 1957 and 1963. Today, the 2nd Battalion is the only active component, with all the inactivated battalions being shut down between 1991 and 1997. It is assigned to the 1st Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 11th Airborne Division.
