U.S. ARMY 890TH ENGINEER BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 890th Engineer Battalion was originally activated as the 890th Engineer Aviation Battalion in the Mississippi Air National Guard on 25 March 1953. It was allocated to the Mississippi Army National Guard on 1 August 1953, and was subsequently redesignated as the 890th Engineer Battalion in 1957. As of 2020, the Battalion is assigned to the 168th Engineer Brigade, 184th Sustainment Command, Mississippi Army National Guard and is headquartered at Gulfport, Mississippi.

The Battalion has been called into active Federal service on two occasions since the inception of the Global War on Terrorism, with two of its companies (B and C) being tapped for the Valorous Unit Award for extraordinary heroism in action during their 2003-2004 deployment to Iraq. In 2014, the Battalion was awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation for its 2008-2009 deployment as part of the 926th Engineer Brigade. As of Autumn 2023, the Battalion is assigned to the 184th Sustainment Command, Mississippi Army National Guard.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

Scarlet and white (silver), branch colors of the Corps of Engineers, are used for the shield portion of the 890th Engineer Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia. A triangle in the upper portion of the shield stands for the Greek letter “Delta,” a reference to the organization’s origins in the Mississippi Delta region of Gulfport. The stylized black bird in the Delta alludes to the organization’s original role as an Aviation Engineer unit. “Duty Is Ours,” the Battalion motto, has been featured on the unit crest since it was originally approved for the 890th Engineer Aviation Battalion on 3 October 1955. The insignia has been designated for the 890th Engineer Battalion since 5 April 1957.
