U.S. ARMY 877TH ENGINEER BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 877th Engineer Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia was originally approved for the 877th Engineer Aviation Battalion on 14 March 1955 and redesignated on 17 September 1968 for the unit’s current title. Its red and white (silver) colors reflect the Battalion’s status as part of the Corps of Engineers, with the white saltire (“x” shape) and red field reversing the colors and design of the Alabama state flag (red saltire and white field). The saltire also suggests airfield landing strips and, combined with the wings on the saltire, recall the unit’s original mission as an Engineer Aviation Battalion. A fleur-de-lis denotes service in France during World War II. “Les Hommes De La Terre,” the unit motto, is French for “The Men Of The Earth.”

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Assigned to the 226th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, Alabama Army National Guard as of Autumn 2023, the 877th Engineer Battalion was originally constituted in the Army of the United States as the 877th Airborne Engineer Battalion, Aviation and activated at Westover Field, Massachusetts on 1 January 1943. Redesignated on 24 March 1943 as the 877th Airborne Engineer Aviation Battalion, the unit would take part in two campaigns in the European Theater during World War (its Support Company is credited individually with two World War II campaigns in the Pacific Theater and a Philippine Presidential Unit Citation).

Before receiving its current designation in 1957, the Battalion’s HQ Company took part in eight Korean War campaigns and earned three military honors from that conflict (Presidential Unit Citation, Meritorious Unit Commendation, and Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation). Since the launch of the Global War on Terrorism and Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, the Battalion has taken part in three campaigns (additional campaign credits are yet to be determined) during the course of three deployments, one to Iraq and two to Afghanistan. Nearly six years after it was deployed to Iraq in June 2003 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, the Battalion was awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation in 2009 for its service during its seven-and-a-half-month tour.
