U.S. ARMY 85TH DIVISION MANEUVER TRAINING COMMAND UNIT CREST (DUI)

The design of the 85th Division Maneuver Training Command Distinctive Unit Insignia—often called a “unit crest,” or simply DUI for short—was approved on 16 May 1967. Its general appearance brings to mind the Army Marksmanship Qualification, an award given during a Soldier’s basic training to recognize individual merit, and suggests Command’s mission as a training organization.

Located at the four primary compass points, the triangular shapes (including the one formed by the bottom of the flame-bearing torch) represent missiles on their way to a bull's-eye; they also recall the shape of a targeting reticle. The central disc and rings further suggest a target. At the top of the insignia is a torch, which in military heraldry almost always symbolizes instruction, training, learning, or knowledge. “Support We Will,” the unit motto, vocalizes the commitment to successfully imbue Soldiers with the knowledge and wherewithal to ensure mission success.

The 85th Division Maneuver Training Command is a unit that has been inactivated, disbanded, or reflagged under a different designation. Its battle honors include an uninscribed World War I Victory streamer and three campaign streamers (Rome-Arno, North Apennines, Po Valley. During the First Gulf War, the unit (designated as the 85th Maneuver Exercise Command at that time) provided training exercise support to units that would eventually be deployed for Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
