U.S. ARMY 84TH CHEMICAL BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Cobalt blue and golden yellow, branch colors of the Chemical Corps, form the background of the shield portion of the 84th Chemical Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia, also called a unit crest or DUI. Dragons are frequently used for insignias of Chemical Corps because of their legendary power to breathe fire and noxious fumes, but here the creature has a death’s head to symbolize the combat function of the battalion. CAVE FUMO, the unit motto, is a Latin phrase meaning “Beware The Flames.”

This insignia was originally approved for the 84th Chemical Battalion (Motorized) on 6 November 1942 and was amended to update the description on 2 January 1987; the description was revised on 7 December 1993.
Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Constituted on 12 March 1942 and activated on 5 June 1942, the 84th Chemical Battalion was reorganized and redesignated as the 84th Chemical Battalion, Motorized on 24 November 1943; this was repeated almost a year later when it became the 84th Chemical Mortar Battalion on 8 November 1944. The Battalion fought in six campaigns in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater, and in two of them (Naples-Foggia and Anzio) the Battalion also took part in an assault landing. The unit was still in Italy when it was inactivated on 25 September 1945.

Over thirty years would go by before the Battalion was redesignated as the 84th Chemical Battalion and allotted to the Regular Army; its Headquarters were simultaneously transferred to the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command and organized at Fort McClellan in Alabama. In 1999, the Battalion relocated to its current home at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, where its mission is to train, educate, and develop Soldiers and Leaders into disciplined Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) Warriors who are capable of enabling mission success anytime and anywhere.
