The 834th Support Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia, also known as a unit crest or DUI, features a gold eagle to convey the Aviation Support mission of the unit, with the color denoting high achievement and honor. A dovetailed joint features counterchanged colors to represent unity and teamwork, while a silver column symbolizes strong, unwavering support, a theme also enunciated in the Battalion motto of “Winged Warriors Support.”
This insignia was approved on 6 March 2000, some six months before the Battalion was organized from new and existing units in the Minnesota Army National Guard with Headquarters at St. Paul. The same day, the unit was reorganized in the Minnesota, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and West Virginia Army National Guard. Since that time, the Battalion has deployed three times in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, earning two Meritorious Unit Commendations for service during its 2007-2008 tour.
Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
