U.S. ARMY 832ND ORDNANCE BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Often referred to as a DUI or a unit crest, the Distinctive Unit Insignia (unit crest) of the 832nd Ordnance Battalion was originally approved on 20 September 1956. It was amended to update its description on 29 July 1986. “Steadfast With Support,” the Battalion motto, is inscribed in scarlet text on a gold scroll, incorporating the primary and secondary colors of the Ordnance Corps. A fire with five tongues of flame represents the Battalion’s battle honors for its service in France and Central Europe during World War II, with a scarlet fleur-de-lis recalling the location as the European theater.

The Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Assigned to U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) since 1986 and stationed at Fort Gregg-Adams (formerly named Fort Lee) in Virginia since 2011, the 832nd Ordnance Battalion was organized on 1 May 1918 as the 3rd Heavy Mobile Ordnance Repair Shop at Camp Hancock, Georgia. Demobilized in May 1919, the unit was reconstituted on 30 June 1931 in the Regular Army and simultaneously consolidated with the 32nd Ordnance Company and given the latter unit’s designation. A ten-year period of inactivation followed, ending with reactivation at Aberdeen Proving Ground on 16 June 1941. The unit was redesignated as the 32nd Ordnance Medium Maintenance Company in September 1942, and it was under this designation that the Battalion would take part in five World War II campaigns.

Inactivated on 15 November 1945, the Company was redesignated on 15 March 1949 as the 32nd Ordnance Maintenance Company and activated on 1 April 1949 in Austria. Four years later, it would be reorganized and given its current designation as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 832nd Ordnance Battalion on 9 March 1953. Following two inactivations, the second taking place on 5 December 1958, the Battalion underwent nearly thirty years of inactivation before its Headquarters was activated and transferred to TRADOC and subsequently organized at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama. On 9 June 2011, the Battalion colors were cased in a ceremony at Redstone Arsenal and subsequently uncased at its current home of Fort Gregg-Adams on 26 July 2011.
