U.S. ARMY 82ND CHEMICAL BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The cobalt blue of the shield and golden yellow of the lightning bolt on the 82nd Chemical Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia are the official branch colors of the Chemical Corps, originally used by the American Chemical Society and adopted by the U.S. Army in 1918. The lightning bolt symbolizes the speed and immediate effects of the delivery of a chemical attack, with the cloud from which it is emerging invoking the imagery of such an assault. POST NUBILA VICTORIA, the unit motto, is a Latin phrase that translates as “After The Clouds, Victory.”

The 82nd Chemical Battalion was constituted under that designation in the Army of the United States on 12 March 1942 and activated at Fort Bliss, Texas on 25 April 1942; its Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved seven months later on 25 November 1942. Reorganized and redesignated as the 82nd Chemical Battalion, Motorized on 16 August 1944, the Battalion saw action in three campaigns in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater and earned an Arrowhead device for taking part in the assault landing at Luzon; it was also awarded a Philippine Presidential Unit Citation for its exceptional performance in that campaign.

Inactivated on 20 May 1947 while stationed in Japan, the Battalion was restored to its original designation as the 82nd Chemical Battalion when it was allotted to the Regular Army on 1 July 1988. Simultaneously, its HQ was transferred to the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command and was organized at Fort McClellan, Alabama, where it trained Officers in the 54A MOS and enlisted Soldiers in the 54B MOS. When Fort McClellan was shuttered in 1999, the Battalion relocated to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, where it continued its training assignment until its inactivation in 2007.
