U.S. ARMY 812TH TRANSPORTATION BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 812th Transportation Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), or unit crest, was originally approved on 5 May 1969. A brick-red disc forms the foundation of this insignia, replete with symbolism and the unabashedly catchy unit motto “King of the Road.” Placed atop the disc is a golden chevron, a traditional symbol of support in heraldry that combined with the brick-red disc conveys the basic mission of the organization.

Superimposed over the chevron is a black bull with a gold crown, an image taken from the coat of arms of Charlotte Sophia, Princess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (Queen Charlotte of England), for whom the Battalion’s home station of Charlotte and its county of Mecklenburg in North Carolina were named. The bull is also an emblem of energy, valor, and magnanimity. On the crown, three fleurs-de-lis allude to the three campaigns credited to the organization for World War II service in Germany (Rhineland), France (Ardennes-Alsace) , and Central Europe.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. Guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
